The Bank publishes a number of different measures of lending to businesses. The M4 lending measure covers all private non-financial corporations, and includes both loans and securities. The data which provide a split between smaller and larger companies covers all loans non-financial businesses.

Net finance raised from banks, building societies and capital markets

As well as borrowing from banks, businesses can also raise finance directly from investors in capital markets through, for example, bond or equity issuance. This is a much broader measure of businesses' finance raised, more relevant for illustrating their borrowing needs.
