Biography

Term of appointment: 14 January 2021 – 13 January 2027

John is a non-executive director, serving on the boards of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the Medical and Dental Defence Union of Scotland. He also serves on advisory boards for the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences and for the Centre for Finance, Governance and Sustainable Growth. He is a former president of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and a former chairman of the Scottish Financial Risk Academy.

He has worked with technology throughout his career to create insurance propositions and has championed the greater adoption of data science and artificial intelligence by the actuarial profession.

John has held several senior leadership roles in the long-term savings industry. These include: partner at Hymans Robertson (2014-2020), managing director at NEST, Customer and Proposition (2013-2014), marketing director at Lloyds Banking Group (2007-2012) and various director roles at Standard Life (1994-2007).

John holds a bachelor’s degree and a doctorate from the University of Glasgow as well as postgraduate diploma from Heriot-Watt University.
