Read the summary from our Community forums in 2021
It is important to us to speak to people, particularly from underrepresented groups, to learn more about the economic concerns of all people across the UK.
That’s why we organise Community forums for third sector organisations and the people they support.
What we heard at our forums in 2021
Poverty, jobs and benefits
Foodbanks and other support services continue to be in high demand.
The impact of the end of the furlough scheme and the top up of Universal Credit payments is a concern.
Debt
Debt advice charities saw an increase in demand for their services as payment holidays begin to end.
Mental health and physical health
Even though restrictions have eased, Covid continues to have lasting effects on people’s mental health. It is affecting their ability to return to work or access new job opportunities.
Some positive things that emerged from the pandemic. Employers are more aware of the need for workplace adjustments for all staff. And they seem to be more aware of their employees’ wellbeing.
Young people and financial literacy
Covid exposed digital poverty in all stages of education.
A lot of young people are uncertain about their careers and job opportunities.
Young people with caring duties would like more support with managing their money.
Third sector funding
The impact of Covid-on organisations’ finances has been uneven.
Many have benefitted from emergency funding or other support schemes.Others have relied on savings and reserves.
These are just some of the themes covered in our Community forums. If you would like your organisation to take part, please email: outreach@bankofengland.co.uk.
